Twist the head off
Unscrew the shower head from the arm by hand. No wrench, no plumber.

Lift out the old cartridge
It sits loose inside the housing. Pull it out and throw it away with your normal waste.

Drop the new one in
Mesh side up, screw the head back on, run the water for thirty seconds. Done.

No. The filtration media binds contaminants chemically. Rinsing washes off sediment but does not regenerate the active material. A used cartridge stays used.
